Planting out Seedlings

The best medium the novice can use for seedlings is an African violet potting mixture sold at local nurseries. Fill a 15 inch pot with this mixture and firm it down. When planting seedlings push little holes into the soil into which the root is pushed. Take care not to damage the root tip. By making the planting medium moist, it makes it easier to plant the seedlings. The holes then do not tent to fall in. Water the seedlings properly after planting

The seedlings can be left in the containers for nine months to a year. During May, the next year, you can transplant the seedlings to individual 15 inch pots. They all should have two to three leafs by now. A coarser potting mixed can be used to plant them in. After two years you can transplant them to 20 inch pots. In these pots they will have their first flowers.

As soon as you see the seed the roots of most of the
seedlings are about 2 cm long, you can transplant them into the seedlin trays.

When planting seedlings push little holes into the soil with a sharp object into which the root of the seedling can fit.

Push the root gently into the hole. Take care not to damage the root.

Carefully pinch the hole close with your thumb and forefinger. Do not push down. The rest of the hole into which the root fit wil stil be open and make it easy for the root to grow down without pushing itself out of the soil.

If you are using the same container to plant two or more breeds of seed, use a piece of plactic wire or wood to separate the two. Make sure you have labeled each correctly.

Water the seeds gently, taking care not to was the seedlings out of the planting medium.
